As the sun drops lower, shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more strongly out of our direct line of sight, allowing warmer reds, oranges, and golds to become more visible. Over water, those colors are often reflected back in broken bands across waves and wet sand, so the palette seems to exist both above and below the horizon.

That is the part I find most beautiful: the colors never arrive all at once. They move through one another—warm sky against cooling water, coral beside blue, gold fading into dusk. A coastal sunset palette works indoors for the same reason. It lets warmth and depth coexist without either one taking over the room.
