A shell is more than something the tide leaves behind. It carries evidence of growth—spirals, chambers, ridges, color, wear, and imperfections formed over time. Perhaps that is part of why so many of us find it nearly impossible to walk a shoreline without looking down.

Shells can hold memories too. We remember where we found certain ones, who we were with, or the beach we carried them home from. A small object can suddenly contain an entire afternoon by the water. The Natural Geometry of Shells

Shells grow through processes that create many of the patterns we find so visually compelling: expanding spirals, repeated ridges, chambers, symmetry, and variation. The nautilus is one of the best-known examples of spiral growth, although real shells do not necessarily follow an exact golden or Fibonacci spiral.

Those structures are part of what makes shell art so satisfying to look at. The eye naturally follows the curve of a nautilus outward, traces the ribs of a scallop, or moves across the repeating pattern of a sea urchin.

Why Seashell Art Works So Beautifully on Glass

Glass is especially suited to the fine detail found in shells. Ridges become more defined, pearl and cream tones gain luminosity, dark backgrounds become deeper, and reflected highlights can bring extra dimension to polished shells, coral, sea urchins, and glass floats.

About Echoes of the Sea

Shells are some of the forms I return to most often because there is always something else to notice—a spiral, a chipped edge, an unexpected color, a ridge worn smooth by water, or a tiny pattern that only appears when you look closely.

My shell work ranges from individual studies to more elaborate compositions combining shells with coral, sea urchins, orchids, antique glass floats, and other objects connected to the coast. Some pieces feel almost scientific; others become more atmospheric or sculptural. What connects them is the fascination that begins with the real object itself.

Printed on luminous frameless glass, the finished artwork is designed to preserve that detail while bringing the natural architecture of the shoreline into contemporary interiors.
